Loch Ossian (Jul 2012)

Fri 20th – Sun 22nd July 2012

Travelling in shared cars we parked at Rannoch railway station on the Friday evening and took the short train trip to Corrour before heading to the Loch Ossian Hostel, in its idyllic surroundings.  Warmly greeted by the midges on the short walk in we later met up with other members already ensconced at the hostel.

The Saturday morning weather was perfect with excellent visibility.  Most of us headed up Beinn na Lap where little Andrei was to effortlessly achieve his first Munro.  For some, descent led to a battle through dense coniferous woodland before following the road round the far end of the loch and heading uphill again.  Juan took off for a solo walk (which included a loch swim!!), while the remaining group headed across some unforgiving peat terrain up to Sgòr Gaibhre.  After hitting the summit, Allan (what bagging list?) headed back to Rannoch while the rest went on to Carn Dearg then descended to the path at Peter’s Rock and on to the hostel.  Meanwhile between them Andrew B and Andy M undertook other walks including Leum Uilleim, Beinn a’ Bhric and exploration of the Chiarain bothy.  The day ended with a very welcome and hearty communal evening meal.

While most of us spent a lazy and drizzly Sunday morning chatting until the mid day train, Andrei and mum Elena retrieved a stag’s skull and antlers – a well-deserved reward for his previous day’s efforts.
