Mountain Biking

Scotland is one of the best places in the world for
mountain biking.
Whether you are looking for a short and easy ride or an adrenaline pumping downhill experience, there are literarily hundreds of venues to choose from.

Past excursions by DMC members have included Laggan WolfTrax and Glentress (one of the 7 stanes).

There is also the World Championship route at Ft William that can be accessed by gondola and an excellent facility at
Glen Coe Mountain
with routes that can be accessed via chairlift.

If you are looking to stay closer to home, there are lots of options, a favourite being the Sidlaw Hills. Chris Stamp has put together an excellent site detailing lots of routes within 1 ½ hours drive of Dundee (see MTB routes website).

At venues such as Laggan Wolftrax, you can usually hire all equipment including mountain bike and safety gear
(sometimes booking is necessary).

Routes tend to be graded in a similar way to ski run as follows:-
  • Green grade (easy)  trails are suitable for beginners or novice cyclists.

  • Blue grade (intermediate) trails are suitable for intermediate cyclists or mountain bikers with basic off-road riding skills.

  • Red grade (difficulttrails are suitable for proficient mountain bikers with good off-roading skills.

  • Black grade (severe) trails are suitable for expert mountain bike users, used to physically demanding routes.

  • Orange (Bike parks) are suitable for riders aspiring to an elite level of technical ability; incorporates everything from full on
downhill riding to 'big air' jumps.

There are often opportunities to go mountain biking as part of our weekend meets - from heading out along forest and mountain tracks to visiting nearby centres such as Laggan Wolftrax. We also run the occasional dedicated MTB day / weekend meet.

Sometimes we also combine mountain biking and hillwalking, using bikes to cycle in to remote areas and then climbing hills there before enjoying the ride back out again.
