Friday 5 – Sunday 7 June 2026
The weekend weather wasn’t exactly inspiring. We woke up to low clouds and rain, so the original plan for a round of the Coniston fells was quickly abandoned. Instead, Lesly, Sandy and I headed down to the lake. Feeling adventurous, we rented a speedboat. After a sluggish 4‑mph tour around the water, we were definitely ready for something a bit more exciting.
As the weather started to improve, we made our way to Cathedral Quarry. The “cave” and tunnels were amazing, and the walk through the countryside — broken up by two pints and a Coke at the pub — was absolutely perfect. After exploring Cathedral Quarry, we decided to continue on to the flooded Hodge Close quarry, which had been recommended to us. It wasn’t easy to find the path down to the water, but eventually we managed, and we had an amazing sun club meet there.
We arrived back at the hut late and after a tasty dinner, we listened to stories from the hardcore groups who had conquered the fells by walking or running.
On Sunday, there were as many different plans as there were cars. Making the most of the day, Yasmin, Lesley and I visited the old copper mine next to our cottage and climbed Holme Fell.
I hope we’ll be back soon to this beautiful part of England.
