Saturday 20 – Sunday 21 July 2024
Originally planned for Tongue, but due to low signup and poor weather forecast 5 of us decided to go camping anyway, closer to home in the Cairngorms. As we met at Linn of Dee, the rain poured down from the sky and the short cycle from the carpark to Bob Scott’s bothy was short but wet.
We pitched tents and then scuttled into the bothy for a convivial couple of hours chatting to the occupants and sharing communal bottles and flasks of tea, wine, rum and whisky.
On return to the tents, I discovered hard rain without and a gentle drip within my tent, and opted for a bothy meet.
The next day dawned mostly dry and mostly clear, so of course the midges appeared and we headed off in 2 groups – one towards Ben Macdui and the other for Angels Peak area. Unfortunately the route to Angels Peak proved slow and boggy and it was decided to head instead to the Garbh Choire Refuge, take in the scenery, and return. Ben Macdui proved busy but interesting, with views to Aviemore appearing and disappearing and ultimately a pleasing 3 munro route via Derry Cairngorm.
