Ben Nevis (Jun 2012)

Sunday 10th June 2012

“We set off at 6am from Dundee and drove to the car park at the head of Glen Nevis. The weather forecast hadn’t been great and turned out to be even worse than was forecast. The car park was in thick mist and we were subjected to a merciless midge attack while getting boots on. No views at all even when walking through the gorge, and although we could hear Steall waterfall we certainly couldn’t see it! We climbed Aonach Beag first and had planned on doing Aonach Mor as well, but conditions were so poor that we descended to the bealach between Aonach Mor and Carn Mor Dearg, then climbed Carn Mor Dearg and followed the arete round and up onto the Ben. We reached the summit 6 hours after leaving the car. Again because of the conditions we decided against a direct descent to the car park and instead came down the “tourist ” track to the Youth Hostel (in 1 hour 45)  where we were able to hitch a lift back up to the car. Soaked through to my knickers, I was!” – Andy Murphy
